A year out of school, I have a good starting gig at a paper with a circulation around 80,000, covering business. The problem, if you can call it that, is my boyfriend: Also a reporter, he lives a half-day's drive away. We've been together for a long while and want to make things work out, and while we're happy together, the distance is proving tough on both of us. So I've thought about moving to be with him, but it's not that easy; his market is a tough one to break into.

I'm considering taking a job in a related field, most likely PR, to be closer to him but worry that it would sink my chances to get a reporting job in the future. Does a young reporter have any chance of getting back into the field if she leaves it?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Distant

It could be very tough to get back in once you leave and not just because of the editors.

No re-entry
Yes, editors might question your commitment and, depending on your time away you will lose ground to others, but there is another issue to consider.

A good public relations job could set your career off in a new direction, a promotion, a raise, a new job and you'll be in a new groove. If it is one you like, fine. If it will leave you wistful for what you left behind, that could be a problem.

What about having your boyfriend move to your city?

Better yet: Maybe the two of you can both get busy on landing jobs in the same city.

Coming Monday: This job seeker is proficient at finding the job postings, but he finds the jobs to be elusive and wonders whether networking is the better approach.
