Are we finally in the day and age where we can send printouts from electronic archives as clips? Are there still strict rules for clips?

Yes, we have arrived!
Printouts from Web sites, Nexis and digital archives are increasingly common. They are, in many cases, easier to handle and read than the old clippings.
People are a couple steps beyond that, too, with online portfolios that link to their articles and some very nice prints that incorporate the text with thumbnail images of the page where they appeared.
With all the manipulation that is possible digitally, do not in any circumstance doctor the clips, not even to correct errors made by others. And do be careful about printing off your clips at work.
Coming Friday: This journalist, who occasionally applies for openings that sound interesting, is reluctant to send references with the initial application, as some postings request.
