Rupert Murdoch’s $5 billion bid to buy Dow Jones & Co. sent its stock soaring yesterday, but journalism pundits yesterday seemed less thrilled by the possibility that the venerable Wall Street Journal could fall into the media mogul’s hands.
“What remains to be seen is if he were to purchase Dow Jones (and the) Wall Street Journal is what the impact would be on the journalism,” said Bob Steele, media ethicist for the Poynter Institute.
“Would the Journal be the hallmark of rigorous professional journalism that it has, in general, achieved over the years?”
