Lucille DeView, columnist, writing coach, playwright, dies at 85
Associated Press
Published: 9/29/2006

Excerpt:

Lucille DeView, an award-winning playwright and a former columnist and writing coach for The Orange County Register, has died. She was 85.

DeView, who also worked at The Detroit News, The Christian Science Monitor and Florida Today, died Thursday of heart failure in Palm Bay, Fla., the Register reported Friday.

DeView started writing weekly columns for the Register in the 1990s. She was also among the first news writing coaches in the nation as newsrooms worked to improve their prose in the late 1970s.

"A writing coach in that day was unusual," said Roy Peter Clark, a former writing coach and senior scholar at the Poynter Institute, in Florida. "There was no map for that. Lucille was one of the people who drew the map."
