Al Martinez recalls when Buchwald praised his Oakland Tribune column in 1964. "It was a seminal moment for me, a tribute, however casual, coming from the man who's been called 'the patron saint of political satire,'" he writes. "I hadn't even realized he'd read my work or knew who I was. I can't remember what we talked about after that, but I knew from that moment on that I was doing it right."
