The Douglas County (MN) administrator's plan to have local newspapers stories about the county fact-checked by his office was withdrawn after it was protested by the newspaper and county residents. "We do not need our stories to be pre-authorized, prearranged or sanitized," says Echo Press editor Al Edenloff. "We're the watchdogs, not them." The county chief used the word "apologize" eight times in his four-paragraph apology that ran in Friday's paper.
