Jan Simpson, who was Time's first African-American assistant managing editor, "has held down pretty much every job in every category at the magazine, and excelled at each one," writes Time managing editor Richard Stengel. "She cared immensely about how our society looked after the most vulnerable among us, and was one of the first to write about domestic abuse in America and how women are not protected by the courts, as well as the treatment of the mentally ill."
