Lt. Gen. William Caldwell, who recently returned from Iraq after 13 months as the chief spokesman for US forces there, says he struggled to convince colleagues that openness with the media would pay off. He told that National Council of Editorial Writers that soldiers commonly believe that there's little they can do in an encounter with a journalist beyond risking saying something that will get them in trouble. "The attitude is, 'What good can possibly come out of a media interview?'" he says.
