Father's honest death notice brings strangers to son's wake

The paid death notice for Nicholas Ryan Dunn, 28, stood out. "It wasn't a typical life story but rather a simple, pointed and heartfelt message with an opening sentence unlike any other obituary I've ever read," writes Star editor Dennis Ryerson. The obituary began: "Yesterday my son took his own life. He did not intend to. He did something thousands of people have and are doing, using drugs." The young man's father tells Ryerson: "I was hoping people would read it, and maybe help save even one other person's life." The reaction to the notice was "overwhelming," says the dad, with strangers showing up at his son's wake. || More editor/ombud columns:
