Paul Steiger says he's "conflicted but hopeful" about prospects for a Murdoch-owned Journal. He tells journalists at the Asian American Journalists Association convention that he didn't talk about the mogul's offer because any public comments made while directing WSJ's Murdoch-DJ coverage would have been "totally inappropriate." In addition, he says, "I just wasn't convinced that acquisition by Rupert Murdoch was the worst outcome. ...Really, the only alternative to Rupert was to go it alone. That was always my preferred alternative."
