Joe Ungaro, who died suddenly over the weekend, was 76. The Stars and Stripes ombudsman worked at the Providence Journal-Bulletin in the 1960s and 1970s before working for Gannett, becoming CEO of the Detroit Newspaper Agency. In 1973, he posed the question to President Richard Nixon about his underpayment of federal income taxes that led to Nixon's memorable "I'm not a crook" reply. || Obits from the Providence Journal and Journal News.
