Joe Morgenstern explains why: "If we like a particular film, that's better than a kick in the pants and the studios will use our quotes in their quote ads. But our readers won't turn out automatically; they're too discriminating and too not-young to fit Hollywood's favored youth demographic. If we dislike a film, the fear is that our negative reviews will somehow influence the hordes of quasi-critics who cater to that demographic, and who are, knowingly or not, part of the publicity machine."
