Highlights Are Great (But Not When You Lose!)
Posted by Steve Klein 11:41 AM

I picked a bad day to discover that Yahoo Sports is now offering streaming video highlights from my favorite sports events. As the National Hockey League resumed play after the Winter Olympics, my favorite team, the Detroit Red Wings, were unfortunately scheduled to play Tuesday night in San Jose. Unfortunate because that's a 10:30 p.m. ET start for me -- too late for my weekday schedule. Of course, that's what TiVo is for! And unfortunate because with five Swedes missing from the lineup following their gold medal performance in Torino, the Wings lost the game, 5-1.

When I checked Yahoo Sports this morning for the game story and box score (ouch!), I noticed a new "Highlights" icon next to the familiar "Preview," "Box Score" and "Recap" links. And when I clicked it, up came my default media player to show me five San Jose power play goals (ouch again!) and one score by the Wings. Yahoo recommends a broadband connection for the best viewing experience. Users can also customize their own video channel to create a "My Channel" page. That's not new on Yahoo, but this is the first time I've noticed the sports highlights.

By the way, now that I've seen those highlights, I've erased the game on my TiVo. However, the Swedish Wings are back for a game in Anaheim tonight.
